Regulatory risk & due-diligence guidance

How to interpret warning notices, identify clone firms, and verify broker authorisation before funding an account

1. Clone firm impersonation

Verify the exact domain & contact details

Clone firms copy the legal name, registration number, and address of a genuinely authorised institution while operating from a look-alike domain. Always compare the broker’s live website domain against the domain recorded on the supervisor’s official register (such as FCA FRN, ASIC AFSL, or CySEC CIF records).

2. Unauthorised solicitation

Confirm local passporting & retail permissions

An offshore entity within a multinational group does not automatically grant statutory client-money segregation or investor compensation coverage in your home jurisdiction. Confirm which specific legal entity will hold your account before signing an onboarding agreement.

3. Withdrawal & execution disputes

Document evidence & escalate early

Repeated withdrawal holds, retroactive trade cancellations, or demand for upfront “tax” or “unlock” fees are high-severity red flags. Never send additional funds to release a balance; preserve trade logs and payment receipts for submission to the relevant financial ombudsman or card issuer.
